In the following lines I present Our Recipe Book, a CLIL teaching unit.

This teaching unit has been applied in English as a second language in a Catalan school in order for children to gain greater command of English, while at the same time learning about the digestive system and the importance of following a balanced nutritional diet.

By clicking on each of the sessions, you will be able to access the session description, the materials used and other tips that might be of use for those who are willing to apply the teaching unit I put forward.

Before getting into it, I would like to mention two key elements of the Teaching Unit:

  • TU Timeline: I strongly encourage the teacher to hang a long arrow on a notice board. On it, there can be short headings of the different parts of the teaching sequence. As the group completes the activities of the sequence, a sample can be added to the timeline. It will help the students remember the concepts learned, recall what they did and what is left to do to achieve the final objective, and, foremost, to always keep into account the final product in order to make the activities a little bit more meaningful. The students can also be encouraged to bring additional objects or materials they think they are related to what they are learning, so that they make this project their own.

  • Routines: learning concepts we cannot see is hard in itself. Let alone learning them in a foreign language. In this sequence, I suggest creating routines the children can easily get used to. This way they can attribute meaning of a series of initially incomprehensible words and gain confidence to learn in English. The routines I suggest take place at the beginning and at the end of most of the sessions.
