This first session is devoted to introducing the Teaching Unit (TU) and to relate it with their previous knowledge.

Objective of the lesson: To review the digestive system

SESSION 1

First of all, the teacher presents the TU's final product (a healthy-recipe book) and its audience (the pupils' families and friends), so that students have a clear goal and know the purpose of it. It is advisable for the teacher to explain the steps they will follow to achieve this final product, and to do so by sticking a clear timeline on the notice board.  This timeline will be used throughout the entire TU to recap what the children have been working on and what they still have to do to achieve their final goal. Here the different tasks they will carry out will be attached, too.

Groups & Roles

The teacher first explains that they will work in groups. Each member of the group will have a rotatory role, additional to the task they will have to complete. The teacher is encouraged to explain what each of these roles consists in. Finally, the teacher can create the groups and give the badges to the children accordingly.

Once in groups, the teacher gives out the material to prepare the poster (a pen, a glue stick, the poster support and the information to be added). From there, the pupils will have to organise the information provided according to what they already know.
The completion of the activity is quite intuitive if the teacher locates the set of sentences where they belong. However, if needed, modelling the completion of the task will certainly be of help to the children.

Exit Slips

Exit slips

The teacher gives out the Exit Slips at the end of the lesson, in order to give it closure. Each child completes one of them. There is no need for them to get the right answers, but just to try to get right as many as possible in order to retrieve what they just learned.
